Fascicles of Flora of India : Fascicle 28: Orchidaceae: Orchidoideae Cranichideae: Subtribe Goodyerinae
Volume 28 deals with a taxonomic revision of the subtribe Goodyerinae in India. The members of the subtribe Goodyerinae belonging to the tribe Cranichideae under subfamily Orchidoideae are commonly called the 'Jewel Orchids' due to their beautiful reticulate to mottled leaves. The subtribe is represented by 73 species belonging to 13 genera; of which, 18 species and one genus (Aenhenrya) are endemic to India.
The taxonomic account of each species is presented in this book with its current accepted names, basionym (if any) followed by all relevant synonyms pertinent to Indian literature, types, common names (if any), detailed description, phenology, habitat, and state-wise distribution in India and very elaborate and detailed notes. The book is also supplemented with 29 line drawings, 46 coloured dissection photo plates and 65 colour photographs for easy identification. Most of the species of this subtribe are specific to a particular microhabitat; any natural and man made changes will have great impact on population status. Though many species of this group are found in different protected areas, a proper management strategy including the ex-situ conservation is urgently needed.
