India’s huge population is a resource. However, it may become a liability by indiscriminate excretion of vast quantities of solid and liquid wastes, lack of sanitation and toilet facilities, endangering public health and resultant pollution. The country is facing the degradation of the environment with polluted land, air and water sources. Since the technical and administrative solutions have not been adequate, the government has recently launched the clean India Campaign (2014). This aims to build toilets for all, help in cleaner settlements by better solid and liquid waste management. This is a unique opportunity to adopt an integrated approach for urban and rural sanitation, solid and liquid waste management, and cleaning and protection of rivers and water bodies for improved public health, hygiene and clean air, water and land.
