Dynamics of Occupational and Educational Mobility in India
This book, which is divided in eight chapters, provides a comprehensive illustration of occupational and educational mobility in India. The initial two chapters present the context, background, data, methodology and limitations of the study. The third and the fifth chapters present the transitions in the pattern of occupational structure and level of educational attainment respectively among sub-groups of Indian population over past 27 years i.e., 1983 to 2009-10. Similarly, the fourth and the sixth chapters illustrate the pattern and magnitude of intergenerational occupational and educational mobility respectively among various socio-religious groups and by regions in India with other covariates’ effects, and changes therein over the period. In order to comprehend the educational opportunity at initial level of education in India as an associated exercise of the intergenerational educational mobility, the assessment of children’s access up to elementary level of education at appropriate ages during 1986-87 to 2007-08 is presented in the seventh chapter. Finally, the eighth chapter summarizes the study by highlighting major findings and underscores major potentials, challenges, and opportunities in India related to the dynamics of education and occupational attainment of the population.
