Synopsis

This Field Guide has been brought out as a 'user friendly companion' for the natualists, foresters and trekkers to the' Land of five Kedars' and surrounds who wish to rejoice the astouding beauty of Himalayan flowes and keen to refresh their field botany. This guide is based on an extensive explorations made by the authors in various parts of kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary sprawls between the inner valleys of Mandakini on the left extreme and Alakanada gorge on the north-eastern flank. The sanctuary harbours a diverse array of flora and fauna typical of western Himalaya. Owing to a wide altitudinal range of about 1100 to 7068 m asl, varied topography and bioedaphic conditions, one finds a large number of vegetation types, rich array of mammals, butterflies, birds and reptiles.

More than 575 species have been describe with the photographs. The maximum care is taken while describing the species character, as making it understandable to the wider visitors, reseaerchers, local communities and tourists. Tough scientific and boyanical terms are avoided.

An annexure has been provided in the last containing all the plant recorded from the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and its environ with their lical name, distribution range, habit and flower colour. More than 1100 plant species have been listed according to Bentham and Hooker system classification.

About the authors

Dr. Ishwari Datt Rai

Dr. Ishwari Datt Rai is working as Project Scientist at Wildlife Institute of India (Wll). He has masters and Ph.D. degrees in Botany from Kumaun University, Nainital. He joined Wll in 2007 and since then working in different aspects of Himalayan forest ecology. His research interest includes plant taxonomy, long term ecological monitoring and climate change impacts on Himalayan forests. He extensively surveyed high altitude forests and alpine ecosystems of Western Himalaya. He discovered three new taxa of flowering plants including one species of Rhododendron and recoeded several to the flora of Western Himalaya.

Gajendra Singh

Gajendra Singh was awarded the degrees of B.Sc. (Agriculture) in 1993 and M.Sc. (Agriculture) in the subject of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management in the year 1996 from the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishva Vidyalaya, Jabalpur (M.P.).   In 1997, he joined Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar for the Ph.D. Programme and was awarded the degree in 2001.  In addition, he holds the masters degrees in Business Administration with specialization in Marketing and also have management qualifications in the area of finance and cooperation.  He has contributed research papers on food security and other related issues which are published in reputed journals.  Dr. Singh has also worked as a member of the Sub-working group on "Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure" constituted by the Planning Commission, Government of India for preparing Eleventh Five Year Plan.  Dr. Singh selected through Union Public Service Commission, at present serving in Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.

Dr. Gopal Singh Rawat

Dr. Gopal Singh Rawat is Dean, Fculty of Wildlife Sciences, Wll, Dhradun. He did his Ph.D. (1984) and D.Sc. (2007) in Botany from Kumaun University, Nainital. He joined Wll, as a Faculty of Wildlife Biology in 1986. He is also a Fellow of the Nationa Academy of Sciences, India (Allahabad,2004). He is a member of the IUCN/SSC Orchild and Medicinaln Plant specialist groups and a Life member of the Association for Plant Taxonomy. He has published more thsn 250 research papers and authored more than 5 books.
