Glossary of Revenue and Allied Terms of South India
Synopsis
It is nearly a century and a half since H.H. Wilson wrote A Glossary of Judicial and Revenue Terms of South India. During this period a lot of research has been done on the revenue and allied topics of South Indian history resulting in new interpretations of many important terms. Moreover, ever since the present author started doing research on South Indian history more than three decades ago. It has been his desire to compile a comprehensive and handy Glossary of the revenue and allied terms for scholars working on the subject. This will enable them to overcome the difficulties which the present author faced. This Glossary includes over 5,000 terms collected from the inscriptions in Sanskrit and Dravidian languages, and English. Urdu and Persian archival records. Since many of the words have more than one usage in different contexts, an attempt has been made to explain all those usages. This Glossary is definitely going to be an enlightening and innovative work both for readers and scholars interested in the economic history of South India. This commendable compilation will unveil and reveal myriad mystiques enveloping words and terminology related to a subject as rich as Revenue. The author, however, is well aware of the fact that it is just not possible to either give a final interpretation or decipher each and every term or give definite answers to all the terms. It is just the beginning and his purpose would be amply served, if the work succeeds in giving some satisfaction to the readers in general and scholars in particular.
