Further Geoarchaeological Investigation in Bori and BorRiver Basin of Western Maharashtra
The book represent very systematic, in depth, summaries of various geoarchaeological processes along with illustration, , figures, graphs, charts and photo plate. The author tried to describe the applications of geoarchaeological techniques for the studies of semi arid zones of Bhima basin. He became successful to point out the ground truth conditions in quaternary deposit in Deccan land regions of Central-southern part of India.
The book begins with Introduction chapter, which followed by ‘Research Methodology; Archaeological of Bhima, Man, Sina, Bor, Bori; Archaeology and fossil; Geoarchaeology and summary’ chapters. ‘Introduction chapter’ includes the definition of geoarchaeology, aims, objectives and previous research in areas of geoarchaeology. The details of the field and lab method applied for this work is described thoroughly with previous work in ‘methodology chapter’. While the details about the field investigations such as landform characters, site documentation details, relation with fluvial features, stratigraphy of section and floral-faunal and sediment characters with sampling data is given in the form of appropriate table, graph and charts plates and with description of Bhima, Bori, Bor, Man, Sina. Group-I in secondary context site and Group-II is open air sites. The next chapter ‘Archaeology and fossil’ deals with the lab analysis of floral and faunal remains by using standard method. Similarly, the final chapter ‘Geoarchaeology and summary’ gives the concluding remarks of all the chapters of this book. Geoarchaeological observation at different geoarchaeological locations such as Halalli, Umbargi, from Bori river and Daridevara, from Bor river. While the geoarchaeological examination at Umbargi in Bori river, is reserved for future study.
However, the many examples presented give the reader a clear sense of the "state of the art" in geoarchaeology. If the examples in this chapter are not enough, thirteen appendixes are provided listing geoarchaeological studies involving fluvial environments. Not all states are included but this bibliography represents a significant portion of the geoarchaeology done in alluvial settings.
The good quality figures and captions are used to introduce various processes with references to recent literature.
As a textbook for geoarchaeology as a whole this book falls short of its goal, but as a book about alluvial geoarchaeology of from semi arid environments, where its strength lies, it is excellent. For all archaeologists seeking such a book I highly recommend this one.
