Useful Wild Edible Fruits of Odisha
From the Foreword: The state of Odisha, due to its varied agro-climatic conditions, is enriched with vegetation and trees bearing wild edible fruits. These wild fruits are consumed largely by local inhabitants, particularly tribals. They have a wide range of colour, taste, flavour, and ripening season and contain free radical scavenging molecules, such as polyphenols, phenols, flavonoids, steroids and dietary glutathione. They are a good source of neutraceuticals required for a healthy diet and may contribute to the prevention and treatment of disease. Since food and phyto-resources are shrinking globally due to rise in population and other climatic factors, it has become imperative to find new alternatives of nutrition for enriching the resource base of our food basket and document their food value. The present scientific work is aimed to identify, record vernacular names, document distribution, occurrence and estimate the nutritional value of lesser known wild edible fruits in the state of Odisha. Based on popular tribal consumption, a list of important lesser known wild edible fruits of different regions of Odisha has been documented. In view of impending utility, some hitherto unexplored genera, used frequently by local inhabitants were selected for their biochemical and other related analysis.
