Adolescent Mental Health: A Situational Analysis
Institutionalized adolescent girls form a group of population, who have been deprived of various forms of care not only by their antecedent experiences, but also by the simple fact of being away from their homes. Institutional care in Karnataka has been sensible and committed in meeting the basic needs of adolescent girls, but the individual care, attention, love and warmth are not adequately met. As a result, it may lead to mental health problems. The present study is the initial effort to observe the situation of adolescent girls in institutional care in Karnataka. In this book, an attempt has been made to ascertain the need for mental health care in the institutional set-up. Through an analysis, the relationship of mental health with various variables such as behavioural, emotional and other related problems, adjustment problems, stress and self-esteem, etc., the author has tested number of hypotheses and drawn conclusions. On the basis of an elaborative profile of institutional care, the author had tried to highlight on the inadequacies of adolescent care and offered practical suggestions for improvement. This study, no doubt, will be of great use not only for mental health professionals but also for academicians and practitioners in the field of child and adolescent mental health.
