Food security is a matter of prime importance in India where more than one third of its population is estimated absolutely poor and as many as half of its children have suffered from malnourishment. The agriculture sector has an important role to play as a majority of India’s rural population depends heavily on this sector for its livelihood and income. Diversification of agriculture is important to attain the objectives of increased farmers’ income, employment generation and sustainability of natural resources and meet the requirements of food and nutritional security in the country.
