India and World Trade Organisation: Planning and Development
Synopsis
The Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations has not only been the most controversial, but also the most comprehensive and ambitious among the rounds held under General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT). It has resulted in the improvement of rules of GATT applying to trade in goods; the adoption of the General Agreement of Trade in Services (GATS); and the adoption of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). One of the most important achievement of this Round is the establishment of World Trade Organisation (WTO), which entered into force on January 1, 1995. On that date, GATT ceased to be a separate institution and became part of WTO. The book is based on the research carried out by the author on "WTO, its implications on selected sectors of Indian economy-agriculture and Textiles & clothing". It has been brought out that all WTO member countries are required to adopt national legislation and regulations to implement the rules prescribed by the Agreements and other legal instruments. Any Member that considers another Member to be flouting the system or infringing any of the rules can bring a complaint to Dispute Settlement Body of the WTO and request for a settlement of differences.
