Privatizing Sick Public Sector Undertakings
Synopsis
Loosing public sector undertakings have been a matter of great concern for the governments, bureaucrats, educationists and every other person who has interest in the national economy. Becoming sick of large number of PSU's forced people to look for an answer to this national economic problem. Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Finance Minister, Government of India, too the policy decision of privatizing sick PSU's. We have, however, till data not succeeded in this effort. The probable reason for not succeeding in implementing this policy decision in practice may be contradictory results obtained in the countries where the PSU's were privatized. Over and above this, political interests, disagreement about the meaning of the concept, its potential to rescue sick PSU's, its acceptance by the employees, its perceived effects on the discharge of governmental social obligations to wards the nation, and non-availability of the indigenous empirical literature on the subject also seem to be factors responsible for non-implementation of this instrument. This book is an effort to answer different questions related to the various facets of privatization. The book studies the concept in Indian context and suggests how it can be effectively implemented for achieving the desired results. Author feels that the book shall be of interest to parliamentarians, bureaucrats, managers, educationists, and every other person who may have interest in national economy.
