Profitability of Indian Agriculture
Synopsis
The book is a serious attempt to look at profitability of Indian farming in the rural environment in the state of West Bengal, India. West Bengal is agriculturally a dynamic state with significant changes taking place from time to time in cropping pattern, technology and government policies. As is the case in other states of India, agriculture in West Bengal is also dominated by small and marginal farmers with all inherent constraints for growth and prosperity. Since farming is the main occupation, it should provide sustenance to them. Further, it assumes special significance in the context of WTO and its implications on Indian agriculture. In this context, cost effectiveness, cost control and profitability analyses assume critical significance. The author with training and experience in the subject matter of commerce has done a good job in looking at farming in West Bengal from wider prospective to make it lucrative and market oriented. The study is a professional contribution with required details on the concepts, methods, analyses and intelligent articulations of the findings of the study. Besides cost analysis, the study also covers finance and marketing, profitability and productivity. The study also looks at emerging issues, suggestive explanations and suggestions for future research. All these features of the study make it eminently suitable for a serious reading. Cost accounting is a new filed that needs to be promoted in agriculture, in the context of slowly emerging trends towards commercialization and harnessing uncommon opportunities connected with globalization and WTO agreement.
