State Government and Politics in India
Synopsis
The study of State Government and politics in India assumed considerable significance since 1967. After the fourth General Elections, the Congress Party dominance both at the Centre and States was challenged and it was thrown out of power in several states. Many regional as well as opposition parties – singly or jointly came into power. As a result, a new era of state politics emerged in India and assumed great importance for the academics and non-academics both. The present book is a valuable addition to the scant literature available dealing with the real state executive and state level politics. It covers, in a comprehensive manner, the different aspects of the formation and working of the Council of Ministers in states particularly in Uttar Pradesh since 1967 and in this context analyses the working of parliamentary system in Indian states. This is a well researched and well presented study. For this study a good deal of material from official records has been marshaled, a number of political leaders has been interviewed and first hand information has been gathered to deal with the topic in competent and convincing manner. As such, it is a significant contribution to the empirical study of the party governments and party system at state level in India.
