The Steadfast Wisdom
These are the discourses on the verses narrating characteristics of Sthitaprajna—a person of steadfast wisdom—given before a small circle in Seoni jail in the winter of 1944. Thousands of satyagrahi men and women throughout India recite these verses with devotion during evening prayers. These discourses are presented here for them in the form of a book. While doing this, modifications necessary for this purpose have been made. The characteristics of Sthitaprajna contain a whole philosophy of life. Here is an effort to unravel it. A part of this exposition may not be fully understood in the first reading. But repeated reading, coupled with reflection accompanied by the practice of what is understood will make everything clear through experience. The interpretation given here is backed by constant reflection for thirty years. There are bound to be deficiencies in it. The only remedy is to dedicate it all to God and be free. For me, this is essentially the purpose behind this publication.
