Pig Diseases and Management
India has 9.06 millions of Pigs and more than 40% of them are in north eastern India as per 20th Livestock census.. There is a decline of 1.23 million of pigs compared to previous census. Pigs are mainly reared by economically disadvantaged people in the society. This reduction in pig population may be attributed to diseases affecting pigs and in turn lack of knowledge about their management. Delay in management of diseases affecting pigs causes huge economic losses. We do not find a comprehensive information on pig diseases and their management in Indian perspective at one place in one book. Many Researchers, Academicians, Veterinary officers and students conversed that there should be a book on Pig diseases and their management referring to the scenario present in India and also to be written by academicians, researchers working on different diseases of Pigs and their management in India.. This is how a thought process flowed into selecting a topic on Pig diseases and their management and experts were selected to scribe on topics of bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases of pigs and their management. This book is a sincere effort being made to include chapters on economically important bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases of Pigs and their management. A special chapter on necropsy procedures is an important part of post mortem examination. The Researchers, Academicians, Veterinary officers of India investigating such diseases have contributed chapters. The scientists of ICAR-NIVEDI carrying out detailed research on pig diseases have tremendous field knowledge of pig diseases and have contributed to their maximum extent. Majority of the topics covered are on endemic diseases and efforts are also made on highlighting some emerging diseases which warrants preparedness for control and prevention programmes.
