Ashavali Brocades (Handlooms of Gujrat)
About the book Ashavali brocades of Gujarat have been overlooked as a traditional textile. The researchers have also been oblivious to it. Inspite of the fact that these brocades laid the foundation of brocade weaving in India, there has been no comprehensive research conducted on these brocades. This is the first book written on the past and present of Ashavali Brocades of Gujarat. Living with these brocades and unwrapping the layers of history to discover the roots of Ashavali brocades for 8 years was full of challenges. Dearth of literature, lack of evidences and decline in awareness about these brocades became the key factors to do this intensive research. This book is a tribute to the weavers, for surviving through the changing times, for working hard with love, compassion and gratitude, for sustaining the heritage of Ashavali Brocades. This book is a drop in the ocean of textiles; an effort to preserve this heritage for future generations. Rare samples of Ashavali brocades, illustrated design vocabulary and the process of zari making as well as weaving of these brocades has been photo documented in this book.
