Mangroves are among the most threatened habitats in the world. Despite of their significant role in the livelihood of over half the human population, majority of the mangrove habitats are under serious threat throughout the world. The book ‘Mangroves of India- A Pictorial Field Guide’ is aimed to provide detailed information on the current status of mangroves in our country and the diversity of the mangrove flora among the coastal states. Detailed information on the true mangrove species of our country along with their salient identifying characters are provided supported by numerous photographs. The book provides us a thorough  insight on the adaptations of mangroves and the current scenario of the diversity of true mangroves of our country and their distribution among the coastal states of India. Dichotomous keys to the family, genera and species are also provided for easy and accurate identification of the species. A total of 42 true mangrove species under 23 genera belonging to 16 families are enumerated. Local names, notes on habit, habitat and ecology and uses are also provided. The book also provides description along with photographs of a total of 68 common mangrove associate species of India. A short chapter in the common mangrove fauna is also provided with numerous photographs. The book also contains a dedicated chapter on the common threats to the mangroves and conservation strategies. The information provided in the book will be very useful as a comprehensive identification guide for students, scientists, foresters and all those concerned with the protection of mangroves and it will significantly contribute in the conservation and management of mangroves of India.
