Thrown across the farthest reaches of India, obscured from the greater world by ageless forests and formidable mountain ranges, the state of Assam has Asia’s great natural and anthropological sanctuaries. Favourable climate, topographic and edaphic factors support huge variety of flora and fauna from here. However even after this immense range of diversity, very few studies have been done to study the invertebrate faunal diversity from the state of Assam in last 50 years, which ensures the possibility of getting an updated and diverse account of invertebrate fauna from this hill state. This sparked the concept of invertebrate faunal studies from the state of Assam. For the first time, a consolidated study has been done on the current taxonomic status of different invertebrate faunal groups from the state of Assam. The Survey has been done along different protected areas from the state of Assam including different National Park and Wildlife Sanctuaries. Present research work includes invertebrate faunal resources studies across different district of Assam throughout the entire state. The book dealt with 6595 faunal species covering Protozoa to Mollusca from the state in 27 chapters. The detailed checklist of 80 species of Protozoa, 6595 species of invertebrates along with 113 species of endemic fauna of Assam have been illustrated in the document. Moreover, 16 species have been recorded for the first time from India. Further, 134 species have been recorded for the first time from the state of Assam. This book will serve, as a baseline data to understand the invertebrate faunal diversity of the state as well as it will be a comprehensive documentation for revised conservation strategies and sustainable use of bio resources.
