Ghosts of The Deep: The Shipwrecks of Sri Lanka - Diving into Maritime History
For several thousand years, Sri Lanka has been a hub for maritime commerce, resulting in many ships falling victim to maritime disasters and skirmishes at sea. Ghosts of the Deep is an extensive photo journal that recounts the stories of how over 50 of these vessels transformed into shipwrecks, and the narrative account of the author’s exhilarating experiences of exploring them in their current state as artificial reefs, which are now home to a multitude of marine life. The author Dharshana Jayawardena, is a pioneering underwater explorer in Sri Lanka. He is an avid underwater photographer, videographer, technical deep diver, and a cave diver with over 1,500 dives to date. He has identified the origins of several mystery shipwrecks around Sri Lanka and discovered its first underwater cave system. It is noteworthy that many of the authors discoveries were accomplished while diving solo, even at depths exceeding 200 feet. His achievements have earned him international recognition as one of top 100 outstanding people in the Asian dive industry, including the ADEX Asian Explorer of the year award in 2019.
