Shakti: Fair & Fierce: Empowered Women Artists from India
The Museum of Sacred Art (MOSA), in collaboration with the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), is honored to present “Shakti: Fair and Fierce.” This catalogue showcases the remarkable talents of over thirty-five contemporary women artists and traditional embroidery artists from diverse regions across India, each leaving an indelible mark on contemporary Indian art.
Among the featured artists are seasoned artists like Arpana Caur, Brinda Miller, Jayashri Burman, Kanchan Chander, Madhvi Parekh, Radha Gomaty, Sangeeta Gupta, Seema Kohli, Shantamani, Sobha Broota, and Sujata Bajaj, as well as emerging stars such as Charuvi Aggarwal, Keerti Puja, Nivedita Mishra, Puja Mondal, Richa Navani, Saadiya Kochar, and Sonal Varshneya, offering a dynamic perspective on India’s artistry. In this, the artworks, filtered through an inclusive feminine gaze, reflect the artists’ own and their associates’ struggles, triumphs, dreams, desires, and ambitions.
It also highlights several important embroidery traditions, such as Chamba Rumal from Himachal Pradesh, Kantha from West Bengal, Rabari from Kutch, Sujani and Katwa from Bihar, and Pashmina from Kashmir.
