Fungal communities are an important component of forest ecosystems and have a broad range of functions. Among these the Macro fungi or mushrooms are fleshy fungi represented by 41,000 species across the globe; however, only 2% have been reported from India. Macro fungi have long been investigated for various scientific purposes including their food and medicinal characteristics with a high prospective for the production of diverse range of secondary metabolites and bioactive compounds with the significant potential to be developed and applied in numerous industries, including agriculture, biomedicine, cosmeceutics, pest and waste management, nutraceutics and biotechnology. Worldwide, they are well recognized as supplementary foods due to their high nutritional values and their medicinal importance. The impact of mushroom diversity, composition and functional group diversity on ground and above ground forest and agro-forest ecosystem processes is not yet fully understood. The book entitled “Assam Fungorum: A Book on Macro Fungi” provides information on macrofungi available in forestlands of Asam, India. The book covers information’s ranging from morphological identification of macrofungi, their diversity, ecology, field guidance for bio prospecting. Features over 132 coloured images illustrating the diversity of wild macrofungi, their habitat and taxonomic positions. The book emphasizes the present research on macrofungi and its future prospects.
