Gambar composed this book with some variations from the original vernacular Ramayana. It is called Kambaramayanam because the Ramayana was composed by Kambar.
Kambaramayanam consists of six kandas namely Balakandam, Ayodhya candam, Aranya candam, Kidkinda candam, Sundara candam and Yuddha candam and one hundred and nineteen (119) plates. Conduit is the major division and foil is its subdivision indicating. It is said that the seventh canto "Uttra Canto" was composed by Kambar's contemporary "Ottakkoothar". It is said that the development of Tamil literature reached its peak during the period of Kambar (twelfth century AD). Considering the specialness of this book and the pride of Thirukkural, these two books are called "Tamilukku Kathi" (Kamparamayanam Thirukkural).
Learned scholars call Kambar's Ramayana as Kampanathakam and Kampachitram. The camphor's yapu colors sparkle throughout the thread. There is also a calculation which says "Varamiku Kampan said Vannamun Munnuotaare (The number of Yapu Varnas is 96)".
