Synopsis Shyness in universal. Everyone possesses it at varying levels and experiences it at one time or the other. Signs of shyness can be seen by frequent trouble talking, stammering, stuttering, blushing, shaking, sweating hands, and a mix of emotions like fear, interest, tension, worry, pleasantness, embarrassment, joy and sorrow. Inward signs include racing heart, inferiority, complex, etc. it may develop due to the influence of genetics and/or environment. Shyness may have its influence on the education of students. Considering the very role of students’ shyness in education, a study has been undertaken to identify the shyness present in the secondary school students and to know about the influence of certain variables on it. The ninth class students are moderately shy. The variables such as gender, parents’ occupation, parents’ income, and academic achievement have their influence on students shyness. The parents, teachers and community should world hand in hand to socialize the shy students thought their social acts and personal activities. As a sociable child will be a successful citizen, everyone should try to remove shyness of the children. This study will be useful to the parents and teachers for identification and removal of shyness among school-going children. It will also be useful to the heads of schools in organizing suitable curricular and co-curricular activities inside and outside the school.

Dr. Digumarti Bhaskara Rao (9-6-1957), M.Sc., M.A., M.A., M.Ed., PhD., a university rank holder, has had his higher education from Andhra, Bhopal, Nagarjuna and Osmania universities. He is author and editor of about 200 books that include 5 Encyclopaedias and has published more than 300 papers and articles on science and edcucation in India and abroad. He has co-chaired a symposium in an International Conference on Psychology held at Martin Luther University, Halle- Wittenberg, Germany; acted as a group leader in International Seminar on Educational leadership and Social Change Held at Tallinn Pedagogical University,  Talling,Estonia; and studied the educational Programmes in Bhutan. He is selected by the Unified Teaching Service, Government of Botswana to teach in Botswana and by the Austrian study Centre for peace and conflict Resolution, Austria for the International Peace-Keepers and Peace-Builders Training Programme with the sponsorship of Government of Austria. He is honoured with Seva Ratna Award, Vidya Seva Vibhushan Award, Bharat Gaurav Award, Jewel of India Award and Best Citizen of India Award for his meritorious and commendable contributions to the field of education. The Government of Andhra pradesh appointed him as Associate Member, Distric Co-ordination Committee on Vocational Guidance and Educational Counselling. He is appointed as a Member, Board of Management, Jan Shikshan Sansthan, under eminent Person in education category by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. He is with R.V.R. College of Education, Guntur, A.P., India.

Vanaja M.

Dr. Vaneja M., M.Sc.-Ed. (Phy.), M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D., had her higher education from Mysore, Annamalai and Nagarjuna Universities. She was awarded U.G.C. Net Scholarship and pursued her doctoral degree under the UGC-JRF/SRF scholarship. She worked for 3 years as Assistant Professor in the IASE, S.V. University, Tirupathi and has conducted 10 in service training programmes for physical science teachers of Cudapah and Chitoor districts of Andhra Pradesh. She is regular contributor to journals and on topics concerning science education; value field interest is in Human Rights and Value Education. Her Papers of value Education have been awarded the 2nd Best paper at 35th conference of IATE, held at Mysore and selected for special Award by the NCERT’s Annual Competition (2002) for Ininovative Practices by Schools teachers and teacher educators. Presently, she is working with the St. Joseph’s college of education for women as faculty member and is engaged in teaching (B.Ed./M.Ed.) and research.
