New Trends in Indo-Russian Relations
Synopsis
This book attempts to examine the New Trends in Indo-Russian Relations after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Over two dozen outstanding scholars have analysed, these relations in the new historical conditions. It is relevant to mention here that recently Russia conducted its first naval exercise with India, which brings out the nature of strategic cooperation. These relations should be seen when a series of steps are being taken by Russia to forge closer economic and security relationships across a vast region from Central Asia to South East Asia. A specific feature of this study is how the main focus of Russia’s policy is focused on India and China. Jointly with China, Russia for instance has moved to turn the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation into a full fledged regional security body. It is expected to extend its mandate beyond Central Asia by inducting India and Iran. Above all, bilateral ties with India and China, Russia is actively promoting trilateral cooperation among them. This shows how Indo-Russian relations are developing and deepening and have already assumed a multi-dimensional character—strategic partnership, fight against international terrorism, defence cooperation, naval cooperation in the context of strategic importance of Indian Ocean region, commonalty of interests in Central Asia and the present level of economic cooperation etc.
