Economics of Crop Diversification
Synopsis
The agricultural sector had made a remarkable progress during the post-Green Revolution years in India. Though initially acreage and yield growth has contributed much in the growth of agricultural output in the later stage cropping pattern has become more important in respect of agricultural development. Crop diversification has also been experienced by West Bengal, one of the prominent agricultural states of India and because of its social, economic and environmental implications crop diversification has now become an important issue of research. This book is an attempt to explore the nature, causes and consequences of crop diversification in West Bengal during last two and half decades. Several attempts have been made by researchers to analyse the reason behind crop diversification. But none of them have taken into account to the overlapping sowing and harvesting seasons of different crop that may be an important cause for the determination of allocation of land resources. This book has given a special thrust towards this aspect and shows how in a system of multiple crop production, choice of crops in a particular season can affect the cropping choice in the following seasons. The present study also reveals how with the limited land resources farmers can maximize the probable return by judicious allocations of land towards of cultivation of different crops without affecting the long run productivity of land.
