Soil and Greenhouse Effect: Monitoring and Mitigation

S. Kumar (Editor) H. Pathak (Editor)
Synopsis Global warming, caused by the increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, has emerged as the most prominent global environment issue. Agricultural soils contribute substantially to the greenhouse effect primarily through the emission and consumption of greenhouse gases. For the last two decades the research efforts have been intensified on the quantitative measurement of emission of greenhouse gases from soil. As a result, very useful information has been generated which has enriched our understanding on emission of these gases from soil under various land-use types. This is the first book to examine comprehensively the processes and factors responsible for the formation and emission of these gases from soil and to take a stock of the mass of available information, summarize it and present it in a simple form to catalyze the practical application. Individual chapters are dedicated to subjects such as the processes of greenhouse effect; global warming and climate change; emission of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia from soil; measurement techniques of greenhouse gas emissions from soil; greenhouse effect and soil biota; impact of climate change on Indian agriculture; various organizations working on global warming studies and the glossary of terms frequently used in global climate change studies. These are backed up with schematic diagrams and illustrations. With a clear and concise text this book will prove an invaluable source reference for the students in agriculture and environmental sciences, and researchers and policy-makers concerned about the 'Global Climate Change'.
