Andhra Pradesh Development
Synopsis
Andhra Pradesh has been vigorously pursuing economic reforms since the mid-1990s for stepping up economic growth and alleviating poverty, while protecting environment. These initiatives have earned a name for Andhra Pradesh as one in the forefront of economic reforms, raising high expectations within the country and abroad about its performance. The papers in this volume examine the development experience of Andhra Pradesh in the wake of the on-going economic reforms and challenges ahead. The essays in the book analyse: Macro-economic scenario; Infrastructure - power, irrigation and IT; Sectoral studies – production and social sectors; Employment, poverty and regional disparities; environment; decentralization. The book highlights that there remain significant challenges in the economic and social sectors that the state needs to address if it is to derive full benefits from the reforms already launched and to make development more balanced, broad-based and sustainable. It is hoped that the analysis in this book would provoke a useful debate on the formulation of appropriate strategies for sector-specific interventions and to reach out to the poor and the disadvantaged section and backward regions.
