Synopsis Dictionary of Aquaculture is a book of words or terms of scientific/technical nature provides meanings, explanations, descriptions and informations on several subjects, related to aquaculture, namely aquaculture engineering, biology, biochemistry, economics, endocrinology, nutrition, pollution, pathology, physiology, sociology, soil and water chemistry, biotechnology, genetics, ecology, geography, taxonomy, statistics, management and administration etc. with major emphasis on aquaculture which deals about fishes and prawns of fresh, brackish and coldwater, many other aquatic organisms as well as other information technical and non-technical nature are quite essential for those, to know as a practice and as a course, who are directly or indirectly associated with the subject. Although aquaculture has already taken a spectacular shape for the sake of business/industry as a profession and as a course/study as well and many books are in vogue on fish and fisheries but there still exists a gap of such book, in fact, deals about terms from aquaculture in particular but many others in general, in precise and understandable manner, from other related disciplines. In addition, the book describes about distribution of shell and fin fishes as well as other marine animals including crabs, mussels, oysters, sea urchins, and seaweeds etc. with their scientific names, authors names and common English names; common cultivable fishes, prawns and crabs of fresh, brackish and marine water; a list of threatened species of prawns, fishes and many other marine animals including their families; the major Indian river systems, backwater, brackish water and freshwater lagoons and lakes; major Indian reservoirs; exotic fish species introduced into India; state wise mangrove vegetations distribution; fish by products and their utilization; salient features of identifying characters of Indian major carps; major prawn producing countries of the world; viral diseases of prawns; different fish diseases; different culture systems; traditional culture systems; animals other than fishes used for culture in different countries of the world; different nets and boats used in inland fishing; aquatic vegetations and insects etc. Apart from these, it also narrates objectives and list of members of two schemes introduced by the Govt. of India namely FFDA and BFDA for upliftment of the frames and also for meeting protein demand within the country in one hand but on the other earnings of dollar through export of prawns, fishes and many others to foreign markets.

P.K. Ghosh

Dr. P.K. Ghosh (b. 10-01-1951) qualified B. Sc (Hons.) in Zoology; M.Sc (Zoology) with specialization in Fishery Science and Doctoral degree in Zoology (Prawn Neuroendocrinology). He was selected for the Senior Fellowship off ICAR, New Delhi for Research Work leading to Ph.D. degree. He has vast experience of 27 years in the field of Fisheries (Aquaculture) – fresh and brackish water – covers research, administration and extension (teaching/training). He joined as Scientists in 1974 under the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore (WB) and continued for 12 years. He worked under the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai for about 12 years and associated with several research projects in the field of fisheries as Scientist – S1; Scientist – S2 and Senior Scientist. He is working under the Central Institute of Fisheries Educatioin (Deemed University), Hqs. Mumbai. Currently he has posted in Kolkata as Principal Scientist. All those research Institutes are under the administrative control of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. Products Development Authority (MPEDA), Kochi under the Ministry of Commerce, Govrt. Of India as Farm Manager (Prawn Farming) and also to the Jadavpur University, Kolkata as the Dy. Registrar for about two years from ICAR, New Delhi. Dr. Ghosh has published 21 research papers (including foreign journals from Philippines, Solvak and Polan), 6 abstracts, 60 popular articles, 26 Institute’s Annual Reports and 4 others. He attended many national seminars / symposia / workshop on Prawn Hatchery Development at Chittagon, Bangleadesh and presented paper as an Indian representative in SAARC Workshop on Prawn Hatchery (Bangladesh).
