Guide to Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

Meenal Kumar (Editor) R. Kumar (Editor)
Synopsis This book deals with issues concerning faulty life style factors and occurrence of major and ailments, lack of public awareness, ways of prevention etc. What is heartening is that most of the lifestyle ailments are preventable. Many of the lifestyle ailments owe their origin to work atmosphere, changes in daily routine, eating patterns, sexual permissiveness and the life. Three levels of prevention are now known: primary (intended to prevent disease among healthy people), secondary (directed towards those in whom the disease has already developed), tertiary (to reduce the disability consequent to disease). In addition discoveries in the field of nutrition have added a new dimension to preventive medicine. New strategies have been developed for combating specific deficiencies as for example, nutritional blindness and iodine deficiency disorders. Another notable development is the development of “screening” for the diagnosis of disease in its pre-symptomatic stage, e.g. the cholesterol estimation and mammography to detect proneness to cardiovascular disease and breast cancer respectively. This approach of pre-emptying the disease or its cause by timely intervention in the life style is of great importance. Similar is the case with cancer cervix and other cancers, where prevention and early detection are the keys to longer and better quality of life. What a great difference does it make: prevention of heart attack by proper food and exercise on the one hand and surgical treatment of heart after the attack has occurred. Same is true about cancers, lung diseases and diabetes. The authors have dealt the issues in the following chapters: Preventing Diseases through Healthy Lifestyle; Lifestyle and Cancers; Cancer-free Journey in the Menopausal Zone: Pap Test is the Passport; Respiratory Problems due to your Fitness and Health; Changes in Lifestyle and Prevention of Eye Disease; Prevention of Cancer; Consume Suitable Nutrients (Chemoprevention), Common Urological Problems; Healthy Lifestyle and Prevention of Disease of Ear, Nose and Throat; Holistic Healing; Cancer News and Trends; Appendix; Index.
