Synopsis
Pranab Kumar Sen, Professor Emeritus Jadavpur University in whose honour this volume has been prepared was one of the leading philosophers of our country and a highly respected teacher. This Volume has a variety of representations in styles and approaches, from a wide range of contributors, including some distinguished philosophers of the west, scholars of repute in Indian philosophy, veteran Indian minds working for long in the analytic tradition of western philosophy and young Indians trained in western idioms of philosophizing. The volume begins with a sketch of his life and philosophy. This is followed by a note entitled Pranab Kumar Sen by D.P. Chattopadhyaya and a tribute written jointly by the other three editors. After this three are thirty-five articles which deal with different branches of Philosophy, viz., philosophical logic philosophy of language, ontology, theory of knowledge, Kant, exegesis, moral philosophy, social philosophy, philosophy of art. As Sen’s philosophical interests and expertize were wide, the authors had ample freedom in their choice of topics. The next part of the book contains replies to eleven papers given by Sen in his brilliant analytic style. Sen read all the thirty-five papers, but in spite of his best intention, could not write the other replies because of his sudden demise. The volume concludes with the select bibliography of Sen’s writings. This volume will be of interest to those who are acquainted with sophisticated literature in analytic philosophy, scholars working in different branches of philosophy, and also general readers of modern philosophy.
