Synopsis This book charts the career and persona of Dr. Manmohan Singh, since his humble beginning in the Gah Village, now in Pakistan, to his becoming the Prime Minister of India, the biggest democracy in the world. Singh is not the run-of-the-mill Indian politician. Rather, he is the average Indian at heart. The book dwells into many hitherto unknown facets of this most educated Prime Minister of India, who commands the respect and admiration of India at large. A strange quirk of circumstances that catapulted Dr. Manmohan Singh into the Prime Minister’s Chair in May, 2004. It was as if destiny had this in store for him. Or, was it Dr. Singh’s belief in the dictum contained in the Bhagwad Gita that an individual should do his duty without any consideration for the rewards? When Dr. Singh became Finance Minister under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao in 1991, no one could have dreamt that he would turn out to be the Czar of India’s economic reforms. The Prime Ministership was similarly stunningly unexpected. Singh is considered a political light-weight, but an excellent economic administrator. It is his humility, utmost honesty, intellectual brilliance and overriding patriotism that have created cross-country support for him. Dr. Manmohan Singh wears a crown of thorns. It is to be seen what more destiny has in store for him and for the country.
