Synopsis Being Volume III of the Series: International Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature (Volume I dealing with the Literatures of Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit & Apabhramsa; 1987; Volume II covering Tamil literature), the present Assamese work offers articles on all important poets, dramatists, fiction writers, essayiests and critics and their important works from the beginning of Assamese literature down to the present times. The entries are arranged alphabetically. Generally articles on Indian writers go with their Christian names, but there are cross-references under their surnames. This would enable one to locate the writers easily. The articles have been compiled in consultation with late Dr. B.K. Barua, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Gauhati University. Shri Dimbeswar Neog (the late), a literary historian and poet and Professor Satyendra Nath Sarma, an eminent researcher, critic and scholar and Retd. Tagore Professor of Modern Indian Languages, Gauhati University and edited by Dr. Ganga Ram Garg, the Editor of International Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature Series. For non-Assamese literature, Professor Satyendra Nath Sarma has prepared a Survey, which has been placed in the beginning of the Volume. The first work of its kind in English about Assamese Literature. It should serve the purpose of a handy reference tool. It is a must for the libraries of colleges, universities, institutes, academies and for scholars. It should prove quite useful where Assamese is studied and for scholars. It should prove quite useful where Assamese is studied but also where there is a comparative study of modern Indian Languages. It also serves the purpose of those non-Assamese scholars, who happen to come across names of Assamese writers and their works. Since Assamese forms one of the languages of Eastern India, the present Encyclopaedia should attract special attention in that part of the country.
