The Unquiet Valley
Synopsis
The early 20th century witnessed many forms of popular movements in India which made tremendous impacts on India’s decolonisation process. The history of India’s north eastern region, particularly that of Manipur reveals many fascinating yet unexplored social movements of far reaching significance. The present book is an attempt to examine the dynamics of colonial penetration towards north east and the subsequent transformation of the traditional socio-political order of the erstwhile border state after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. Based mainly on the archival materials, the work not only explores the process of social restructurisation but also examines the deeper socio-economic implications of the various anti-colonial and anti-feudal popular movements in Manipur valley. While discussing the interplay of various social groups emphasis is given on an exploration of the social roots and political ideas of the Manipuri middle class.
