Synopsis
Dr. Atma Ram, a critic of repute, presents insightful observations and critical opinions on quite a few important authors. It contains seventeen fresh and perceptive articles, three interview test, and a small “piece†on how children suffer in life and literature. First, Tess’s moral perspective is studies from a new angle of adjustment of images. In the next four essays the author deals with Jane Austen, E.M. Forster and Shakespears. Then the author concentrate on structural unity in The Old Man and the Sea. Thereafter he discusses a few works by Indian riters. They include Sri Aurobindo, Toru Dutt, V.S. Naipaul, Mulk Raj Anand, Bhattacharya, Anita Desai, Shiv K. Kumar and some authors from Himachal Pradesh. The book makes a significant contribution to critical scholarship in the area. Various literary issues have been dwelt upon in a style which is at once simple, straight and persuasive. Some of the articles are highly analytical and evaluative, while others are illustrative and general in nature. But all are girpping in appeal. Exclusive interviews with three writers-Anita Desai, Kulwant Singh Gill, and Narenderpal Singh-clearly reveal their views on their art and craft. All this helps clarify numerous aspects in literature, and in the process amply makes for several new and novel perspectives.
