Synopsis
This book makes a Survey of the history of the Tiruchirappalli region beginning from the Sangam Age. This region was under the sway of all the important dynasties that ruled over South India and finally passed into the hands of the British. The book covers the epigraphical and literary sources available to a great extent. The main two chapters deal with the architecture and sculpture at the Saptarsisvara temple, Lalgudi. The different portions within the temple complex have been discussed in minutest details. The chapter on sculpture narrates clearly the various forms of Siva his consort and other divinities represented in stone and metal. A large number of inscriptions found in and around Lalgudi region supply interesting information regarding temple administration and those working in the temple in various capacities. They also supply information concerning the socio-economic conditions of the people including the details concerning the pujas and festivals and other religious activities at the temple. The author has narrated them in a vivid manner in scholarly style which is logical and factual.
