Synopsis Freedom Movement in India forms an important epoch in the pages of history. Nationalism and patriotism are valuable sentiments as they generate a passion for political regeneration leading to the achievement of freedom. The great upheaval of 1857 was in reality a product of the accumulated grievances of the people against the British Rule. It became a prelude to the long drama of the epoch making Freedom Movement. The colonial character of the British Rule led to the development of a powerful anti-imperialist movement in India. The year 1885 witnessed the birth of the Indian National Congress. Till the end of 19th century, the congress primarily demanded only Reform, not Freedom. Indian nationalism nurtured by constitutional agitation and watered by the revolutionaries assumed a new dimension with the entry of Gandhi in Indian politics in 1919.
