P. Adinarayan Reddy (Author) D Uma Devi (Author)
Synopsis A number of studies have highlighted the position of literacy among rural and urban women even on Tribal men population in India but unfortunately there are very few studies dealing with literacy among in tribal communities that too women among primitive tribal groups. The study fills the gap in a small way by enquiring in to the factors affecting literacy among the women of Savara classified as one of the primitive tribes in Andhra Pradesh and Toda a well-known polyandrous tribe in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. A few findings from this study go against the accepted assumptions like the tribals are not interested in giving education to their girls. Among both the tribes, overwhelming majority of the women desire that their daughters should receive some education. There are a few other findings who go against popular assumptions about the attitude of the tribal in general and tribal women in particular. The study and its findings is likely fore the researchers to re-think about their research methods and conceptual framework while initiating research among the tribal communities in India. This book will be of great use not only to the researchers in social sciences but also to the NGOs, experts in education and the administrators in tribal areas.
