Creative Arts in Modern India: Essays in Comparative Criticism
Synopsis
The objective of the seminar--comparative aesthetics and criticism of the contemporary arts--was to bring together for the first time in a common forum the art historians, art critics, literary, film and theatre critics; including some of the intellectually minded practitioners of these arts; Sanskrit scholars of aesthetics, philosophers and sociologists, who have been observing, documenting and assessing the contemporary mnanifestations in the various art expressions in varied media in our country. This two-volume publication--Creative Arts in Modern India--has, therefore, been brought out to realise together the manner in which the various art expressions have been reviving, developing and expanding in India during the twentieth century, and the perception of these by the respective critics and some distinguished practitioners. A new contemporary culture is in the process of evolution has been highlighted in the appropriate keynote address by the eminent scholar Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan. While compiling the material for this publication, it was felt that it could become a reasonably comprehensive anthology of critical essays pertaining to most of the arts. A happy cooperation has been received from a number of critics. A painstakingly prepared comparative chronology of all the arts in synchronic order has been attached as the appendix. This publication with sections on literature, theatre, film, dance, music, architecture and the visual/plastic arts, will serve as an exhaustive reference book for the new realisation regarding the modern growth of India as a nation covering in particular the area of culture.
