Synopsis English is a window to the world today. Approximately 700 million people speak English as their mother tongue and in 33 countries 300 million people use it as a second language. In 56 countries 100 million people us it as a foreign language. English played the role of the common language between the British rulers and their Indian subjects as its being the official language of the Raj. It is still recognized as an associate official language. Indian writing in English which started as a trickle in 1801 grew tremendously in the present century. It has produced such outstanding writers like Sri Aurobindo, Mahatma Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, Jawaharlal Nehru, R.K. Narayan, Raja Rao, Mulk Raj Anand, Nirad C. Chaudhuri and a host of others.
