Synopsis
Importance of mental health has always been in existence since time immemorial, but in the modern civilization, its serious effects on the physical health of the people, has become a cause of concern. Urbanization, overpopulation, competition, stresses and strains of modern life are adding to the mental health problems. We have studied as to how our environment has been creating stresses and strains. The need is to make environment harmonious through efforts at various levels. stress is a common occurrence among people causing health hazards, laziness, uninterestedness and lack of physical and mental vitality. Stress in elementary form may not be dangerous but its prolongation causes worry, loss of interest in life and tendency to do no work. In understanding stress we have been looking at one segment of the population of the world namely the highly developed sector, for whom issues such as the problems and challenges of scientific progress and technological advancements, are in the forefront. The fast, sensitive, sharp mind of modern man is demanding its physical system to cope with the rush. Unable to meet the challenges, the physical system is collapsing the problems of hypersensitivity and stress are on the ascent. Stress cannot be cured by medical gadgets. It requires action at the level of mind and spirit which possess unlimited potentialities. Science of Yoga, meditation, pranayama, ethical and moral values have great scope in dealing with the problems of stress. This book having 11 chapters divided into three parts would help in understanding the nature, methods of stress management and education. It is hoped that this book would be of great use to the health experts, research scholars working on alternative health system, students of health education and general public as the literature on this budding discipline is limited.
