Encyclopaedia Survey of Modern India present encyclopaedia set of five volumes will acquire a distinct place among existing works on modern Indian history. Period starts with fall of the Mughal Empire, the balance of power between the Indian state and European trading companies operating in India under the auspices of their mother countries was constantly changing to the Europeans advantage, in sixteenth century all that the Europeans had a few strongholds and ware houses; in seventeenth century followed trading stations and settlements, while in eighteenth century they began to subdue the Indian states. Europeans were not confronting with Mughals but merely individual states that were competing among each other and turning to Europeans for help. Europeans discussed here are East India Company and three other nations were also competing among themself to get hold of Indian trade. From here started a long period of one hundred fifty years of colonial oppression in India and historic movements of Indian freedom struggle that was a unique combination of peaceful and revolutionary stances where earlier one was most effective and finally succeeded. When India finally achieved complete freedom though was politically divided. These volumes depict several aspects of modern history of India, commencing from middle of seventeenth century to independence of India. All the themes have been explained in a comprehensive way. Indeed these volumes will be useful for social scientists, teachers, researchers and students in India and abroad.
