Modern Theories of Library Cataloguing
Synopsis
Despite the fact that a number of textbooks on cataloguing have appeared during recent years. There is one strong justification for bringing out another book on cataloguing. The present study makes a special attempt to undertake a comparative study of three catalogue codes--Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (1978) Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (1967), and Ranganathan's classified catalogue. Code-- (1964). There are classics which represent two different schools of thoughts--one representing Anglo-American thinking and other the Indian school of thought. An attempt has been made to pinpoint the basic differences and similarities in the approaches of these codes. An effort has also been made to discover a synthesis among these. This work is primarily intended to meet the requirements of students studying for diploma in library science and bachelor of library science courses. As mentioned earlier, comparative study of AACR1, AACR2 and CCC, on the basis of normative principles, is a special feature of this work. The first two are meant for compiling a dictionary catalogue and the third one is essential for preparing a classified catalogue.
