India and East Asia: Learning From Each Other

G Balatchandirane (Editor) Sushila Narsimhan (Editor)
Synopsis This volume breaks new ground by investigating the varying paths of development in India and East Asian region and exploring how these countries could benefit from each others experiences. Scholars from major universities in India, China, Japan and Korea analyze and compare the economic, political, social, cultural aspects of development in India and East Asia with focus on the role of education in economic development, political and social transformation; the importance of social and religious values in facilitating modernization; cultural and religious borrowings; and the challenges posed by globalization and present-day geopolitics. Implicit in most of these works is the understanding that, however, pluralistic and diversified the Asian societies might be, there exists an "Asian mind" that has always enabled the cross movement of ideas amongst them. The thrust of this volume is the need to rediscover this today, to seek ways of enhancing cooperation among Asian countries who should be looking more at each other rather than looking to the west.
