Synopsis
The present book Genetic Improvement of Rice Varieties of India has one general chapter, five chapters dealing with the contribution made by the national institutes, twenty one chapters dealing with the work done in states and union territories and one chapter about the role of private sector. Each chapter on a national institute describes the mandate of that institute with regard to rice improvement and the work done on varietal improvement of rice at that institute. It ends with an appendix that describes in detail all the rice varieties bred at that institute. Each 'state' chapter provides a brief description of the physiography, climate and agroclimatic zones of the state, production and productivity of rice in the state, traditional varieties grown traditional cultural practices followed and biotic and abiotic stress situations in the state. It is followed by the organizational set up of rice research in the state. It describes the varietal improvement work done before the advent of high yielding rice varieties in brief and after the high yielding rice varieties in detail. Each chapter ends in an appendix describing in detail all the rice varieties released by that state. The text is supported with data, tables, maps and figures. The book provides first hand information on the work done at each central institute and state as the chapters are written by those who are directly associated with the concerned institute or the state. A uniform outline has been followed for all the chapters to maintain uniformity and consistency throughout the book.
