An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Indian Economy
Synopsis
The present work An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Indian Economy is the ninth title under the ongoing series An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Indian History and Culture. The volume aims to present a survey of Indian economic thinking through the ages with detailed write-ups on 25 eminent economists ranging from Kautilya to Amartya Sen. Section one surveys the evolution of economic thinking in ancient India, Sultanate period, Mughal period, colonial rule and independent India. It serves as a backdrop for understanding the ideas of various economic thinkers. In section two, the editors have selected 25 eminent economists for detailed study. They have briefly indicated the careers of these economists and analysed their major contributions. The Indian economists have largely reacted against the current economic problems and offered their solutions. Some economists like Amartya Sen have made worldwide impact. The Gandhian ideas of economic reconstruction have not been tried even by his closest of followers but they provide a challenge to all those people who dare to perceive a new world order based on moral principles. Section three deals with the areas of economic development and the institutions linked with such areas.
