Synopsis
With the Changing scenario of the modern world, due to globalization, Christianity has become one of the most dominant religious institutions. This book deals with the relationship between Christianity and tribes of India. It was Christianity which tried to improve the conditions of tribes, but it also had certain negative effects. The role of Christianity in the development of schedule tribes in Jharkhand region was immense. Christianity made its appearance in Jharkhand during the British period i.e. in the middle of the nineteenth century, as a major ideology for liberation of those people who were subject to numerous forms of deprivation, exploitation and backwardness the condition of the tribals prior to this period was crucial. To overcome their conditions several revolts were organized by the various tribal groups like the BIRSA MUNDA movement, KOL insurrection, TANA-BHAGAT movement etc. This book has made an attempt to assess the problems of schedule tribes, the process of transformation, globalisation, democratization of human values and the role of Christianity, voluntary and governmental efforts and the consequences of social implications of such developments. The tribes (adivasis) are no longer isolated of civilized society since the article 17 to the Indian constitutions has abolished untouchability.
