A Manual of Philosophy of Science

D.D. Bandiste (Author)
Synopsis Philosophy of Science is an upcoming and developing branch of philosophy. It is a critical study of the outlook, methods, objectives and claims of science and also its effects upon the society. Until very recently human gaze was riveted to the other world; now it is increasingly becoming oriented towards this world. Science has played a great role in causing this shift. Because of this, science is coming under a lot of criticism from those who have lost their prestige and power because of science. They are defaming science in numerous ways. Philosophy of science evaluates these and such other criticisms. The present book starts with giving to the readers even such elementary knowledge as to what is science, what are the various methods of science, what is the nature of scientific knowledge, laws and scientific explanation etc. and of course, come in the problems of meaningfulness and truthfulness of scientific statements. The basic problem: when is any investigation called scientific, is discussed in detail. And surely, the criticism that science does not give us the knowledge which is objective, universal and reliable is dealt with in an elaborate way. Additionally, are discussed a few scientific discoveries and inventions that have significantly charged the very life of man. There after it is pointed out as to how a spiritual liberation is possible through scientific knowledge. The book rather holds that it is science which is performing real miracles and functions as a real liberator of man. This book has the special feature of discussing the numerous recent topics newly introduced in the paper since 2002 by the UGC/ICPR. At the end a broad strategy to take science to society is also indicated. Thus, this book although very much a manual for the students of Philosophy of Science, it is much more than that. It will be of immense help to every genuine seeker of knowledge and also to the social reformers in general.
