Ghana under President Kufuor

Uma Shankar Jha (Author) Asha Bareja (Author)
Synopsis Many of the challenges that Ghana faces are the common challenges facing Africa as a continent. Among these are the massive shortages of finance and technological resources. Experience has taught Africa that good governance, sound economic management, peace, security, democracy and human rights are conditions for sustainable development and growth. Faced with the enormity of the problems and paucity of resources, the government of the new Patriotic Party led by President John A. Kufuor prioritized vigorous infrastructure development, modernized agriculture centred on rural development, enhanced social services with special emphasis on education and health, good governance, and private sector development. An immediate step was to declare the HIPC (Highly Indebted Poor Countries) Initiative in order to send a clear message to the donor partners of Ghana that the new government was earnest about the tasks it had undertaken. The government also expressed its strong conviction in the values of peace, stability, and progress, rooted in democracy. The government’s vision is of a modernized Ghana, proud, globally competitive, and a beacon to Africa. During its first term, the NPP government seems to have covered considerable distance in realizing this vision. Supporting this assessment is the fact that the NPP government led by President Kufuor has been re-elected in the recently held elections. Highlighting these developments and achievements, the present book deals with the themes of Ghana from Nkrumah to Kufuor, a Visionary Leadership, Economy Buonces Back, Social Services, Safeguarding Human Rights, Human Resource Development, Legal Reform, Infrastructure Development, Food and Agriculture, Lands and Forestry, Ecological Policy, Internal Security and President Kufuor’s Worldview. It is an objective assessment of Ghana’s march on the road to people-oriented governance and brighter future.
