Synopsis Bhagalpur silk is a household name in India and lovers of silk fabrics in other countries also. Silk weaving is an age-old traditional household industry of Bhagalpur. The city has heavy concentration of weavers. The socio-economic conditions of the weavers of Bhagapur was good until the outbreak of communal riots in 1989. it resulted in destruction of the famous weaving industry. Weavers were uprooted from their place and livelihood. Severely affected the silk trade. The book discusses the whole scenario quite exhaustively. It also makes an attempt to discuss the measures taken by the government for the rehabilitation of weaver-victims after the riots. An effort has been made through this book so that the weaving industry which at present is quite unorganized, neglected and disarrayed be put on the right track. We would feel amply rewarded if it could lead to initiation of measures on suggested lines at the level of policymakers.

About the authors

Daman Chandra Mishra

Daman Chandra Mishra obtained his M.A. (1977) and Ph.D. (11990) in Labour and Social Welfare from Bhagalpur University. He has been working as Lecture in the Department of LSW in Labour Collage, Bhagalpur since 1978. He has keen interest in research activities. He was associated with the ICSSR Research Project of Dr. U.M. Jha. He is the co-author of the present book.

Ugra Mohan Jha

Ugra Mohan Jha after obtaining his M.A. degree in first class first position joined as Lecturer in University Dept. of Rural Economics & Co-operation, Bhagalpur University in 1970 and since then he has been continuing as reader, professor& Head. He got his Ph.D. degree in 1980 and supervising several Ph.D. projects. He has about a dozen, research papers published in reputed journals. He is the author of book, â€œIrrigation and Agricultural Developmentâ€ published in 1984. He has also written two university level textbooks. He was awarded a research Project entitled â€œEconomic Rehabilitation of Post-riot weaver Victims of Bhagalpur.â€ Recently (in March, 1996) he has been appointed as Director, Agro-economic research Centre for Bihar, T.M. Bhagalpur University.
