Economics of Silk Weavers
Synopsis
Bhagalpur silk is a household name in India and lovers of silk fabrics in other countries also. Silk weaving is an age-old traditional household industry of Bhagalpur. The city has heavy concentration of weavers. The socio-economic conditions of the weavers of Bhagapur was good until the outbreak of communal riots in 1989. it resulted in destruction of the famous weaving industry. Weavers were uprooted from their place and livelihood. Severely affected the silk trade. The book discusses the whole scenario quite exhaustively. It also makes an attempt to discuss the measures taken by the government for the rehabilitation of weaver-victims after the riots. An effort has been made through this book so that the weaving industry which at present is quite unorganized, neglected and disarrayed be put on the right track. We would feel amply rewarded if it could lead to initiation of measures on suggested lines at the level of policymakers.
