Synopsis
Watershed management is the rational utilization of land and water resources for optimum production with minimum hazard to natural resources. Himachal Pradesh has a mountainous terrain, the run-off is very high and this results in acute water scarcity in the summer months. Soil, water and vegetation are the most vital natural resources for the survival of man and his animals. For their efficient management one has to look for suitable unit (s) of management so that these three resources are handled and managed effectively, collectively and simultaneously. The watershed is considered the ideal unit for managing these three vital resources of soil, water and vegetation. With the rich experience in the rural field and the capacity of identifying needs of the people in the villages, voluntary organizations can play an advocacy role in the field of development. They can help policy makers, administrators and planners to have access to new ideas, changing needs and conditions identifying bottlenecks and gaps, helping to develop strategies, policies, training and developing avenues and potentials of social workers, etc. with this as the backdrop, the authors felt that it is imperative that the book be discussed at length on: Some of the conceptual issues like watershed management, development, people’s participation and voluntary agency/organization.
